Helena loan refinancier SoFi doubling down on Montana jobs

HELENA, Mont. — Social Finance (SoFi) plans to build an employee base of 100 in its Helena office. The company opened the Helena operation with two employees less than two years ago as an extension of a San Francisco startup. The company refinances student loans with lower rates. The company has expanded by leaps and bounds and continues this trend, making its mark in an industry dominated by banks.

The San Francisco startup came to Montana in part to work with Helena-based Student Assistance Foundation. The companies have found working together to be advantageous and game-changing. The company then hired the two contract employees in Helena to run its entire software engineering department in Helena. Montana’s burgeoning tech sector makes hiring much easier than tech-saturated San Francisco.

Last September, the company hired an additional 10 employees in its office in Great Northern Town Center. Its present plan is to hire an additional 25-30. Demand is increasing, and so will the number of employees needed for staffing. SoFi has also expanded to help clients with consumer debt, like credit cards and home mortgages. They don’t at present offer these services in Montana, but plan to soon.

The company also plans to launch a wealth management product that will be free for users. Using all digital outlets is part of what makes SoFi’s business model inexpensive to run and maintain. Most or all of these new ventures will be spearheaded out of the Helena office.
